Winner of the Taite Music Prize for 2021's Leave Love Out of This, Anthonie Tonnon breaks a three year drought between official releases with today's new single 'Executive Assistant'. Crystallising his emergent love for electronic pop, those who've caught the Whanganui song crafter / sonic activist's dynamic live sets during recent years — utilising two Synthstrom Deluges on mobile stands with wheels — will be well prepped for the tune's pulsing robo-rhythms and dreamy synthetic textures, co-produced with Jonathan Pearce (The Beths).

Famed for the fastidious conceptualisation and execution of his live events, 'Executive Assistant' is a tantalising preview for Anthonie Tonnon's just-announced Cinematographer tour. A multi-media spectacular described by the artist as "part film, part francophile performance lecture, part disco club set", Cinematographer features visual DJing by Erica Sklenars, videography by Theo Taylor, styling by Karlya Smith and design by Daniel Alexander.

Anthonie Tonnon and friends are taking the Cinematographer tour to Hollywood Avondale in Tāmaki Makaurau, Royal Opera House in Whanganui (hosted by Festival of Design Aotearoa), Papa Hou in Ōtautahi, and Hannah Playhouse in Te Whanganui-a-Tara this October. Tonnon will then bring Cinematographer to Naarm and London in early November, before joining The Veils as special guest for their 18 date tour of the UK and Europe.

Directed by Kristy Pearson and incorporating imagery sourced from Archives New Zealand with brand new footage visually mixed by Sklenars, experience the accompanying video for 'Executive Assistant' made with support from NZ On Air (available as both a single edit and a seven minute extended mix), and don't miss the Cinematographer tour at the following dates...

"Cinematographer is part film, part francophile performance lecture, part disco club set. It's a world that we've built for this new music, exploring some of my great loves – the French avant-garde, cinema, urban politics of the 1960s, turn-of-the-millennium dance music and documentary films, and the glorious, mystifying city of Whanganui.

Executive Assistant was a breakthrough for Jon and I because it gave us the sound that everything else grew from. As an experiment, I started cutting up recordings we'd made with the band and putting them back together in new ways. The result reminded me of the sample-heavy dance-pop I loved in the 2000s. Jon suggested a squelchy acid bassline, and from there a whole new journey began."
