Already a firm favourite of those keyed in to Aotearoa's noisy underground, Awning will soon be reaching international ears, courtesy of a new alliance with Los Angeles imprint Winspear (whose roster includes Teethe and Slow Pulp). Helmed by songwriter and visual artist Christian Dimick, with drummer Riley Noonan, bassist Damin McCabe and guitarists Ethan Broughton and Eli Chamberlain, the Tāmaki Makaurau collective mark this fresh chapter with the launch of 'Little Green Book', the first single since their roundly adored 2025 self-titled debut album.

An angular and poetical meditation on grief, the song's herky-jerky, cog-like rhythms feel both prickly and fluid, erupting in distorted squalls and impassioned yowls when occasion calls. Directed / edited by Damin McCabe and made with support from NZ On Air, the accompanying clip amplifies this nervy energy with stuttering lo res band footage and saturated, semi-abstract colour wash, looking at times filmed directly off a CRT screen. Produced by De Sevens, experience 'Little Green Book' and look forward to more from Awning in the near future...

"This song is about grief, gritty stuff that feels almost too much to put into song format. This is why all the lyrical imagery is open, cryptic and layered up. When things feel too personal lyrically, I like to create a little distance between the listener and myself. The lyrical obscurity allows me some privacy but also opens the song's meaning up, allowing someone to insert their own meaning. I like that about music. In saying that, there are some pretty on-the-nose lyrics as well. “I want to remember what you said” and “Grief is a corner…” I mean, you get the gist. We carry people’s words around for them after they are gone." - Christian Dimick

'Little Green Book' is out today on major streaming platforms via Winspear.
