POWERS
POWERS is the current incarnation of CAMPBELL KNEALE who has ping-ponged about the nether regions of interstellar sound for close to thirty earth-years aboard sonic spacecraft such as BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL, BLACK BONED ANGEL, and OUR LOVE WILL DESTROY THE WORLD.
Known primarily as the captain of his own ship, CAMPBELL KNEALE has also collaborated and performed with some of outsider music’s most defiant and diverse experimentalists... Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Merzbow, Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))), Keiji Haino, Borbetomagus, Phill Niblock, and Tony Conrad to name a few.
Whereas the vast majority of Kneales music revolves around the fastidious manipulation of the multitracking process, POWERS pounds on the thin cracking ice of an ‘everything-all-at once’ mindset, performing and recording his immersive blitzkrieg ragas entirely in the moment, walking the tightrope between triumph and humiliation, daring the ground beneath his feet to splinter and collapse in harmful fractals of fire and smoke. Inspired by ’60s New York loft minimalism, ’70s Kosmische synth, ‘80s No Wave, ’90s Scandinavian black metal demos, and ’00s Japanoise, POWERS pushes everything to transcendental, excoriating, and stroboscopic extremes. Impossibly dense, defiantly raw, and utterly hypnotic, POWERS sets the controls for the heart of a freezing black sun... unfurling the unfathomable with occultic, apocalyptic sound. THE ESCALATION
Ōhinehou ratbags The Escalation (Bruce Russell & Peter Wright) return with another improvised sonic blow out of the cataclysmic kind, cheerfully revealing maximum disdain for health and safety with a cobweb-clearing all-out assault on the senses. Guitars will swing with wild abandon, amps will strain under maximum load, various knobs will be randomly tweaked on stuttering electronic devices. All this and possibly more in the name of entertainment. Word around the water cooler is that their sophomore LP is on the horizon, so be sure to bring binoculars and an enquiring mind.
DYSCHEZIA TENESMUS
Co-founded by Nick Harte and Will Callaghan, Dyschezia Tenesmus acts as a sort of continuation of Harte’s earlier CM Ensemble and later Aotearoa Snuff Jazz Ensemble (the latter of which was co-founded with Bruce Russell and Jeff Henderson). The unit assembles a constantly revolving lineup of performers who record on a regular basis, improvisation being the sole restriction. Born out of the late 60s free jazz boom as much as the 90s NZ free noise scene, Callaghan’s guitar also conjures up the freakier aspects of the 70s Kosmische Musik circuit. Harte (drums) and Callaghan will be joined by Reuben Derrick on sax for this concert.
