The Undercurrent presents Ubuntu and other Cultural Concepts of Humanity!
The Ubuntu Cultural Conversation is an interactive and inclusive cultural event that explores how humanity is understood, expressed, preserved, and shared through diverse cultural perspectives. Through a combination of live music, poetry, storytelling, and open audience conversations, the event will create a space for meaningful dialogue, cultural exchange, reflection, and connection.
The programme will feature live musical performances by Ras Judah (Botswana), Mohamed Shemi (Tanzania), and friends, alongside poetry and opportunities for audience participation. Shared cultural food will further contribute to the spirit of hospitality, community, and connection that lies at the heart of Ubuntu.
The African concept of Ubuntu is often expressed through the powerful saying, “I am because we are.” Rather than placing individual achievement at the centre of social life, Ubuntu emphasises the importance of community, cooperation, reciprocity, and shared wellbeing. It encourages us to recognise the humanity in one another and to respond to the challenges faced by others with understanding, kindness, and support.
The philosophy of Ubuntu reminds us that our lives are enriched when we care for one another, celebrate our differences, and work collectively to create inclusive and connected communities. It offers an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be human and how our relationships with others shape the societies in which we live.
