The Undercurrent presents the Alda Rezende Quartet!
Brazilian vocalist Alda Rezende has spent nearly four decades performing across Brazil and Aotearoa New Zealand. Born and raised in Belo Horizonte, she began her career in Brazil's major music circuits. Since moving to New Zealand in 2002, Alda has become a pioneering figure in the country's Brazilian music scene and has presented Global Pulse, Wellington's long-running world music programme on Radio Active, for twenty years. Her career has taken her to festivals across New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Europe and the United States.
For this quartet, Alda is joined by three of Wellington's most respected jazz musicians. On piano, Duncan Haynes — recently returned home after two decades performing and teaching across London, Paris and Lima — has quickly become one of the most sought-after players on the local scene. On guitar, Noel Clayton is a quietly revered figure among fellow musicians and a mainstay of Wellington jazz for decades. On drums, Lance Philip brings a lifetime of professional experience, from touring internationally with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra to his long-standing role with the Rodger Fox Big Band.
Together, this exceptional quartet moves fluidly through the Brazilian songbook, Latin American song, French chanson and jazz standards from the Great American Songbook. With Alda's rich contralto at the centre, this is a set of quiet virtuosity: sophisticated, intimate, and deeply musical.
