Roz and the Niu Soul Collective - Live at Hallertau, Saturday, March 3, 1.30pm #SaturdaySuite
Roz is of Samoan-Tongan ethnicity, New Zealand born and raised but for now London has been her home away from home. Brought up in a musical family where both parents were involved in Church Choral music and arranging, and an extended family of musicians and singers, it was inevitable that Roz would follow suit from an early age – singing for the first at public gathering at three years old.
Roz began taking piano and violin lessons at age six and made her first debut performance on TVNZ’s “Stars On Sunday” in 1982. This performance caught the eye of many in the NZ industry and opened the door to a host of many television shows and ads during this time including a duet with Frankie Stevens on TVNZ’s Hui Pacific and as a guest on Carl Doy’s Mothers Day Special followed by The Peter Morgan Show alongside Peter, Annie Crummer and the late NZ Jazz icon Beaver.
Roz was also a Finalist in Australia’s X Factor in 2005 in which she was an audience favourite in the live shows which featured her talents as singer/musician on piano. She has performed in bands and as a soloist with some of New Zealand’s top musicians, throughout her musical journey that has taken her through New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands and the U.S. where she represented the UK in Avon Voices in 2011.
Roz’s musical influences are varied from Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Ella Fitzgerald, Sting, to John Legend, Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan and Steely Dan and many more. But it is the music of her childhood that forms the foundation in which she approaches her craft – with quiet intensity, allowing the music to speak for itself and for the listener to go away feeling some emotion from it... happy, reflective, playful, inspired...
