Gig Information

The Audio Foundation is proud to present a concert celebrating the release of Hermione Johnson's new album, 'Tremble', via NYC label, Relative Pitch.

With!

Hermione Johnson
Hermione may be Aotearoa / New Zealand’s most unique and under-acknowledged pianist. For many years she has developed a singular and captivating presence in underground, composition and jazz communities, honing her craft on organs and prepared pianos throughout New Zealand.

Through a variety of extended and prepared piano techniques, Hermione has forged a style of playing which is at times percussive, as if channeling a Gamelan ensemble, while at others ethereal, as if electronic in origin. After receiving formal training in composition (with additional specialisation in piano and pipe organ) at Victoria University of Wellington, Johnson turned her focus to live, non-idiomatic improvisation and formal experimentation in solo and group ensembles. It is in this freer field that Hermione gained a reputation for her dynamic and highly technical style of playing which explores the many timbral qualities of the piano, drawing out a world of voices that she sets against each other in contrasting patterns and phrases in different registers.

And!

A collaborative performance between choreographer and dancer, Zahra Killeen-Chance, and Berlin based musician and composer, Johnny Chang.

Zahra Killeen-Chance's work is aptly described by Jess Holly Bates as 'butoh on a tightrope'. Tightly wound and minimal, she dances in a stretchy shroud that covers her from head to ankle. An amorphous binary defying being, she passes through the audience with gestures of her anonymised body and bare feet. Her dance is all beginnings and openings and newness. Her work is shown at McLeavey Gallery in Wellington and her choreographic work and collaborations with photographer Soloman Mortimer have been shown Internationally since 2016.

Johnny Chang is a Berlin based violinist and composer. Johnny is part of the Wandelweiser composers collective and in 2018, initiated a new framework for the presentation of creative research and performances, Partitions & Resonances, aimed at encouraging new and ongoing collaborative between the varied disciplines of composition, musicology, historical research and performance. He currently collaborates with: Catherine Lamb (Viola Torros project), Mike Majkowski (illogical harmonies), Taku Sugimoto, Klaus Lang, Phill Niblock, Peter Ablinger, Antoine Beuger, Samuel Dunscombe.

As composer and performer, his articulated performances have been featured in: Staatsoper/ OperaLab/MaerzMusik (Berlin), Donaueschingen Musiktage, DNK Days/Sonic Acts Festival/Muziekgebouw (Amsterdam), Huddersfield University, cave12 (Geneva), Cafe OTO (London)
