Vanessa Tottle (Radio Trip Hop Brazil) is excited to showcase a 2-hour set from her hugely successful New Zealand Trip Hop Show at the Portland Public House on 19th of September from 7:30pm.
Some feel restrictive putting a label on themselves and their art, rather for Vanessa, she feels being a Trip Hop artist, gives her a sense of belonging. For her, landing in the genre was a very organic process. Growing up in South Auckland Vanessa was inspired by the type of music she only ever knew as R&B & soul. Through her musical journey she discovered the unique blend of jazz, soul, funk, reggae, dub, and R&B she loved was actually Trip Hop. Now Vanessa wants to share her love of Trip Hop and encourage others to explore the genre. “Once you dive in you realise you have been listening to Trip Hop artists for a very long time”.
Generally, an underground community feel, Vanessa firmly believes the Trip Hop genre is one of empowerment, courage, and individuality. Bass lines that reach into your soul, synths in all the right places - let Vanessa take you on an ear worm velvet smooth vocal set with instrumental tracks showcasing her abilities as a music producer. “When you have people connect with your music, it’s powerful for both of you especially as I produce my own, I’m connected deeply to each song, every subtle detail is a part of me. If people can take something out of my lyrics, I’m very humbled and proud I’ve been able to speak through song”.
