Recent NZ band review https://redraven.news/2025/07/02/wayne-gillespie-and-famous-blue-raincoat-mt-eden-village-27-june-2025-review gives an insight into what to expect albiet in Acoustic Mode!!
He starts quietly .... with This Place, New Locations, which opened his second album. Everybody needs a new sensation...The reference is Lou Reed and many of his songs channel the phrasing of Mr Rock’n’roll Animal (no shit!) but this one is curiously Neil Diamond, out of his classic Bang Original Mono Masters period. Plaintive and emotional, and he plays solo with an acoustic guitar.
The place was packed...In five songs already and we have a wide palette of styles.
Settle Down has a little Fool to Cry (Rolling Stones) piano from Lines. Melancholia of regret and the melodies are enchanting. Gillespie is one of this country’s finest songwriters, and just the breadth of styles is captivating.
(They) wrap up the evening with Until Tonight. Great Pop number of which he inserts a little of Iggy Pop’s Passenger Rev. Orange Peel
