Banjo Apocalypse!
kiwi-folky-punky banjo adjacent
6pm 2nd of November @ Moon bar
The banjo are loose to wail to the skies,
the Apocalypse heralded by Wellington Folk-Punk banjo adjacent acts....
The Bidibids, Banjo Ben and the Breeze, and Billy Lyrical
Smart kiwi music, like gumboots in a coal mine,
direct to you from standing by the side of the road
and it's starting to rain.
With lush harmonies, intricate arrangements, and beguiling melodies, the Bidibids explore what it means to play folk music in New Zealand. The Bidibids are Sarah August on banjo and guitar, Simon Carryer on cello-banjo, and Brendan Schenk on mandolin and guitar. The trio came together at the 2020 Wellington Folk Festival, where they were each supposed to be playing in different groups. Since then, the Wellington-based band have become regulars at some of the region’s best venues for folk music, including the Mussel Inn, Moon, and the Wellington Bluegrass Society.
Banjo Ben and The Breeze are a new 4-piece indie-folk comedy band based in Wellington,
NZ. They are known for their iconic beanies, their regular evening busking sessions on
Cuba Street, and their theatrically charged gigs, which are packed full of catchy lyrics, wild stories and plenty of laughs.
Billy Lyrical has been writing songs about the end of the world since 1984. Like a mix of Tom Waits, Tom Lehrer and Woody Guthrie, he's written hundreds of songs and played thousands of gigs. He's not on Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter, Linkedin, Spotify, Tumblr, Tindr, Grindr, Onlyfans or Pornhub. He's alive and kicking, living in the moment, rocking in the pocket, riffing this condition. We're now entering an Extinction Event, Please extinguish your cigarettes.
