Weekly Round Up: Friday 13th April

Friday 13th April, 2018 4:03PM

Autumn descended upon New Zealand like a tonne of bricks but nothing could stop the great tunes and tour announcements. This week saw hip hop and soul icon Ladi6 announce an extensive two-part tour of Aotearoa starting in June. The first leg will see the artist making extensive visits to often-overlooked regional venues in June, while the second will see her hand-picked, all-lady line up storm the four major centres in July. A couple of guitar-driven Australian acts also announced they’d be gracing our shores in the not-too-distant future, namely Sydney post-punk crew Mere Women in June and surf-punk icons The Hard Ons in May.

We were stoked to premiere the first taste of Dunedin three-piece Death And The Maiden’s forthcoming album Wisteria in the form of their catchy number Oooh Baby In The Chorus, as well as chat with Wellington indie-pop upstarts Hans Pucket about their hotly anticipated debut album Eczema. We also spun some yarns with Aussie party-thrash duo DZ Deathrays and got the the low-down on the musical goings-on in the world of Elroy Finn.

Local releases were on-point, Auckland heavy organ power-trio Wax Chattels unleashed jaded fury on fresh track ‘Career’, while The Grow Room collective pumped out another formidable avant-beat classic in the form of Drako Madtalk’s debut album Involutaria. Electronic duo Go Nuclear shared a robot-heavy video for their pumping tune ‘Machine Learning and Lyttelton’s hard-touring songwriter Delaney Davidson shared his Neil Finn-featuring track ‘What Am I Doing Wrong’.

Our Caught Live video for this week features John Garcia of legendary US desert rockers Kyuss who'll be playing two intimate acoustic shows this month at Auckland's Whammy Bar and Wellington's Valhalla. To give you a taste of what's in store, check out Garcia's powerful rendition of his old group's classic tune 'El Rodeo' at Moscow's Brooklyn Club below...
