Weekly Roundup: Friday 23rd August

Weekly Roundup: Friday 23rd August

C.C. / Friday 23rd August, 2019 4:32PM

Winter festival season is rearing its head and Tāmaki Makaurau's streets are about to go nuts, as The Others Way festival and all its associated side-shows (including an inaugural Pōneke event) will be slamming into local music lovers like a tsunami next week. You can explore the just-revealed timetable for Friday night's jam-packed event, along with full lineup details for all TOW events, right here.

It was a big week for announcements, we kicked off with the revelation that not only does a Ned Flanders-themed metal band exist – named Okilly Dokilly – but they're heading to Aotearoa for two headline events in February 2020! More crucial shows in the near future include boundary pushing Canadian hardcore punks Fucked Up are bringing their explosive anthems to Aotearoa this October, Palmerston North deathcore crew DEPTHS are touring their bone-crushingly intense riffage in October and November, and Ōtautahi pop-bop songwriter and 2019 Silver Scroll shortlister Mousey is touring her yet-to-be-released debut album Lemon Law throughout NZ in October.

You need interviews? We got em. Don McGlashan of currently touring alt-pop legends Blam Blam Blam spoke with none other than Paul Kean (The Bats, Toy Love) about the trio's reunion and more, in a career-spanning interview you can read here. Frank Eggleton of Wellington catchy tune masters Tidal Rave spoke with Australia’s controversial solo artist Kirin J Callinan about his new album and NZ tour, hitting Wellington tonight and the South Island this weekend. Annabel Kean hit up Tāmaki Makaurau / Alaska-based punk Skux to chat via email about her hyper-energising debut collection Kudis, and Chris Cudby had a quick online chinwag with Exit Fear's Dorian Noval about the Auckland punk trio's mind-destroying new DEATHNOTE EP.

Our Caught Live video for the week features US desert rock trailblazers Yawning Man, who are swooping into Aotearoa for their first ever local headline events in January 2020. The trio's generator-powered marathon jam sessions in the desert were a huge formative influence on Kyuss and Queens Of The Stone Age, with Brant Bjork describing Yawning Man as "the sickest band of all time." Dive deep into awesome live footage of the long-running group playing their vibey tune 'Dark Meet', from 2013's Yawning Man / Fatso Jetson split EP, at Berlin's Desertfest...
