Ray Shoesmith or Chopper?
CHOPPER – Because he’s badass and I met him once when I was young. Also, fun fact: Amyl and the Sniffers’ manager used to manage him!

Chocolate: Freddo or Cherry Ripe (chocolate)?
FREDDO – Simple and solid choccy.

Dancers: Raygun or Julia Zemiro from Rockwiz?
JULIA – Raygun’s a poser.

Grandma's music: Olivia Newton-John or Helen Reddy?
Olivia – Grease Lightning, baby!

Guitars: Lobby Loyde or Rick Springfield (guitars)?
LOBBY – Lobby is a legend. We know his son, and I played through one of Lobby’s Fender amps just recently. His son’s a real nice bloke, and yeah, Lobby rocks.

Singing drummers: Keish from Hard-Ons or Ben from C.O.F.F.I.N?
BEN – Don’t know Keish personally, but Ben is a top bloke. Gave me one of his miniature knives for my birthday in March. Love his solo tunes too. Up the Coffin!

Cricketing moustaches: Merv Hughes or David Boon?
MERV – Not big on sport, but Merv was filming some stuff at my work last year and seemed nice.

Prime Ministers: Bob Hawke or Anthony Albanese?
HAWKE – ‘Cause he broke a beer-drinking world record.

Mums: Drunk or Sober?
BOTH – Mums rule.

Footie: Rules or League?
Either is fine; Rules is better, I think. I only watch when it’s the finals. Go the Lions!

Fave Melbourne band at the moment?
UNKNOWNS – Good power pop. Love that old band The Beat, and bands like Unknowns, The Prize, and Loose Lips are doing a good job of reviving that sound.

Fave NZ band at the moment?
THE CLEAN – Bit out of the loop on new stuff over there; hoping to discover some gold. Who should I check out?

ADAM'S PICKS

RUDI – 'Big Time' (1978, Ireland)
Irish power-pop-adjacent punks from ’78 that pull heartstrings and bust skulls at the same time.

The Bureaucrats – 'Feel the Pain' (1980, Canada)
This track starts off sounding like 'What I Like About You' by The Romantics but was released around the same time in 1980. So who wrote it first? This song is better.

VOM – 'In Love With Your Mom' (1978, USA)
Best riff ever — simple and stupid. Members went on to form Angry Samoans.

Slaughter and the Dogs – 'Situations' (1975, UK)
Forming in ’75, this is undoubtedly The Dogs’ best track. Wanna rip it off so bad, reckon anyone will notice? Does it even matter if I do?

Napalm Death – 'You Suffer' (1987, UK)
You suffer.

JAKE'S PICKS

Karrku Reggae Band – “Come On” (2021, Australia)
I didn't have much First Nations music in the bag, but I DJ’d a NAIDOC Week party last month so I went hunting. Came across this rockin’ number that gets people moving. COME ON!!!

Slander Tongue – 'Broken Arrow' (2023, Germany)

Underrated current band from Berlin. They’re coming to Aus in November and I think I’m gonna cry at the gig.

The Exile – 'Don’t Be Pushed Around' (1977, Scotland)
First heard this on one of my favourite sources for underground punk, the Ryan Kidd YouTube channel. Something ’bout this gets me going every time — maybe the odd bass line and the sing-along rebellious chorus. Thanks Ryan.

Nikki and the Corvettes – 'You’re The One' (1977 USA)
Power pop band from Detroit, Michigan. This whole album is good-time power pop perfection.

Andy Swann – 'On Your Way Down' (2017 Australia)
Clocking just 20 views since 2017 — it’s Andy Swann! Shazammed this on local station PBS. Digging the JJ Cale vibes, feels like he’s a local blues dawg.
