Listen to Welcomer's Debut Album 'Calendars'
"Good things come to those who wait" sings Miles Sutton on 'Impossible', neatly summing up the winding journey towards Welcomer's long-awaited debut album Calendars. Expressing a deep love for emotive / poetic songwriting and touching sentiment, perfectly in simpatico with Welcomer's Papaiti Records label mates, storytelling is always at the heart of Calendars. Ornamented by small army of instrumental contributors and co-produced with Jesse Austin-Stewart, these ten songs unpack vulnerable moments of young lives on the move to some other destination, featuring Aotearoa songwriting star Lontalius on earlier single 'Magazine Clipping'.
Amidst the big feels and delicately crafted sonic beauty — which shifts gears into noisey post-rock territory on 'Crescents' — Sutton finds islands of wry humour in often unglamorous circumstances, such as the skeezy gig experiences of 'Scam' and the downcast solitary yearning of 'Aisle'. Tipping the hat to time-honoured masters of the form The Smiths in 'Rafters', there might be a trick missed by not including a tune titled 'Home Alone' (a Papaiti Records tradition) but fans ought to be well chuffed with Calendars either way.
No need to start counting the days until Welcomer's next record just yet. Enter the world of Calendars, snag the vinyl LP from good record stores and go catch Sutton with bandmates Eddie Crawshaw (Lake South), Ox Lennon, and Shannen Georgia Petersen (Sports Dreams) on their launch tour — starting tonight at Snails in Te Papaioea...
