Weekly Round-up: Friday 17th January

Friday 17th January, 2014 9:49AM

Hello guys and welcome to this, your Friday round-up on Big Day Out day! Let's get this out of the way so we can all get down to Western Springs and wig out to Arcade Fire/Deftones/Pearl Jam/insert the band you are excited about seeing here!

Festivals aside, there have been some pretty exciting shows announced this week, taking place here over the new few months. Australian experimental rocker (and possibly the buffest person in alternative music - if you saw his set in support of Grizzly Bear a while back you'll know exactly what we're talking about) Kirin J Callinan is heading to New Zealand for Camp a Low Hum (which is now sold out) and will play two side shows. Speaking of Camp, if you didn't secure a ticket (or if you did but just can't get enough of the acts) the festival organisers have announced a series of after parties and side shows at which The Clean and Tiny Ruins will perform. Liam Finn's recently announced New Zealand shows (also in support of his forthcoming album, The Nihilist) kind of fall into this category too, and you can check out his tour dates over here. A slew of international tours were also announced this week (it's insane how many bands are coming through New Zealand this summer, amirite?), including Martha Davis and The Motels, A$AP Ferg, Pennywise (who will head up a "quadruple headline bill"), and Slow Magic.

If you're the strong, silent type who would rather listen to music in the comfort of your own home than head out to a show fear not! A myriad of our (and hopefully your) favourite artists have announced the release of new albums and shared singles this week, including Liars, who will release WIXIW follow-up Mess (which may or may not be a concept album about a ball of string) in March and have shared single 'Mess on a Mission'. Real Estate shared the first single from their forthcoming full length release Atlas, The Dead Weather have drip-fed us another cut from their album that won't be released until 2015, Dum Dum Girls have shared a bonafide banger off of forthcoming full length Too True, and the Shocking Pinks' Nick Harte dropped the introspective 'St. Louis' off of triple LP Guilt Mirrors, due out on Stars and Letters in February. Speaking of (sort of, anyway) local acts, Tauranga Music Sux have just announced (like, this morning) their second annual Woodcock Festival (it's worth clicking on this link just to check out the amazing complimentary artwork).

Finally, Broken Bells have been teasing their forthcoming album with a short film and single 'After The Disco', and now you can watch them perform another new single, called 'The Changing Lights' via La Blogotheque, below. You're welcome.
