Martin Phillipps & Semisi Maiai (Marlin's Dreaming) Chat In 'Under Cover' Web Series

Martin Phillipps & Semisi Maiai (Marlin's Dreaming) Chat In 'Under Cover' Web Series

Annabel Kean / C.C. / Wednesday 6th October, 2021 10:00AM

Banished Music have launched a new round of their multimedia interview series Under Cover, the latest episode being the very first not held in isolation, instead around the fireplace at Ōtepoti's Larnach Castle. Season one saw candid convos between the likes of Chelsea Jade and Elizabeth Stokes (The Beths), Marlon Williams and The Veils' Finn Andrews, Reb Fountain and Nadia Reid, and more. Created with support from NZ On Air, each episode placed the viewer bang smack in the middle of a in-depth chinwag between two red hot Aotearoa musicians, followed by each artist performing a cover song from the other's back catalogue. Dreamy!

The Chills and Marlin's Dreaming may be separated by a generation or two, but they're connected by their Ōtepoti hometown and their presence in their local music community. For episode one of Under Cover season two, New Zealand music royalty Martin Phillipps (listen to The Chills' new album Scatterbrain here) linked up with Marlin's Dreaming (peep their brand new album Hasten here) front man Semisi Maiai for a cosy fireside chat in Otago's eerie Larnach Castle. The pair delve into how the two bands have crossed paths over the years, the importance of a strong bond between bandmates, and the ever important mum demographic. Watch to the end for The Chills' panoramic take on 'I’ll Stick By You' from Marlin's Dreaming's Talk On / Commic EP, and Maiai's gorgeous version of 1984 Chills classic 'Pink Frost'. It's a perfect appetiser for Marlin's Dreaming's forthcoming Hasten album release tour, watch below...
