Wellington special The Songwriter Showcase will reboot at Moon on the 27th of April.
with Bill Hickman, Yellow Rooms, GiGi and Dead End Roads.
Bill Hickman is an intense, lyrical singer/songwriter from Wellington. A long serving stalwart of New Zealand stages, Bill has played in bands (The Shot Band, Billy Bones, Parcel of Rogues and King Lazy) and as a soloist all over the country and further abroad. A self described ‘folkie with a chip on his shoulder’ Bill’s songs run the gamut from murder and outlaws to absent friends, love and gratitude. With a strong, gravel dragged voice and country inflected acoustic guitar; fans of Warren Zevon, Johnny Cash and Townes van Zandt will find touchstones in his songwriting and selected covers. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a set of gentle melancholy, however, Bill's primary approach is ‘gutsy’. He has done his time howling above the clamour and is always capable of stepping it up a notch when the occasion or story requires.
Yellow Rooms are Wellington based sister duo Sarah and Grace Lawrence. The sisters swap between the violin, guitar, keys and vocals on songs that are both soulful and witty. Listen out for their single ‘Cool’ which will be released in the coming months.
Newtowner David Harris has been fishing deep in the soundhole and will be dishing up some fresh catch alongside some pickled personal favourites. Simmered and seared on acoustic guitar and vocals with a mix of local and exotic spices, come and help yourself to this sonic smorgasboard!
Dead End Roads drift through the shadow alleys of the soul - echoing with silence, each song is a secret confession whispered in the dark, a flicker of light in the fog, a path that leads nowhere and everywhere all at once. This is music for those who wander, for hearts that beat quietly in the dark.
