Lawrence Arabia and Samuel Flynn Scott Chat In 'Under Cover' Web Series

Annabel Kean / Thursday 16th December, 2021 4:00PM

Mates since way back, James Milne aka Lawrence Arabia and Samuel Flynn Scott (The Phoenix Foundation) have a good old fashioned sit-and-chat in the latest episode of Banished Music's web series Under Cover, made with support from NZ On Air. Up until October's gorgeous conversation and cover-swap between Martin Phillipps and Semisi Maiai (Marlin's Dreaming), the series had been entirely conducted over lockdown video calls, including charming yarns between Chelsea Jade and Elizabeth Stokes (The Beths), Marlon Williams and The Veils' Finn Andrews, Reb Fountain and Nadia Reid.

Sat in Lawrence Arabia's lounge with a cuppa, Milne and Scott immediately launch into New Zealand television nostalgia, recalling the ad jingle for a singles phone line, which I can only guess was a memory sparked by talk of Phoenix Foundation track 'Land Line' from their latest album Friend Ship. While Scott has wrapped the roll out of Friend Ship, Milne is just one month away from touring his 2009 sophomore album Chant Darling, celebrating its long-awaited reissue and vinyl pressing. As the Under Cover format goes, the two artists take turns between anecdotes covering each others songs, with Milne performing a jaw-dropping version of The Phoenix Foundation's 2003 track 'Let Me Die A Woman' on a grand piano in the Auckland Museum foyer, and Scott (plus whole band) busting out a gorgeous rendition of 'Bicycle Riding', plucked from Lawrence Arabia's 2012 album The Sparrow. Take a trip down memory lane with old friends James and Sam...
