Adam Hattaway and The Haunters Share New Album 'Hot Variety' + Announce Tour
Ōtautahi's rock 'n' roll pride of the south, Adam Hattaway and The Haunters have been an astoundingly productive musical force since announcing themselves with 2018's debut All Dat Love. Sounding in 2025 like a seasoned pro of the stage and studio, Hattaway greets our Friday with his seventh official long player Hot Variety. A ten song collection of tall tales and raw truths, Hot Variety was laid down at Ōtiake's Sublime Studio over three years with his The Haunters compatriots Elmore Jones, Samuel White, Holdyn Skinner, Tess Liautaud, Thomas Isbister, Liam Quinn, Reuben Derrick, Lucinda Whiteley, and Lorenz Weston-Salzer.
Amongst the new tunes on offer, Hattaway's love for Stonsey grooves happily accommodates the mirror-ball soul-boogie of 'The Last To Leave' (feeling adjacent to classic Primal Scream), while the whispered observational intimacy of 'Not My Scene' makes a surprisingly solid case for Hattaway as Canterbury's own Jarvis Cocker (to these ears at least). 'Mustard Jumpsuit' is an infectious pileup of lyrical imagery and blues-rock bounce, 'Strange Vacation' finds Hattaway pondering his own adventuresome urges, 'Baby It's Cruel' expresses an ever-questing love thwarted by a cold uncaring world, 'Wild and Alone' is like a crooning reality check for late night party animals, and 'Only Love Remains' stands out as a gentle and catchy psych-folk singalong.
Hot Variety is like a holographic snapshot of Hattaway at the height of his powers, joyously eclectic and hitting the mark with grace and gregariousness. Handily for fans he's rallying the troops for an album release tour, taking The Haunters all around Aotearoa plus a pair of Naarm headline dates in the coming months, preceded by an intimate Tāmaki Makaurau solo gig at Frieda Margolis next week. Their itinerary includes the fiesta of guitar-slingers that is Grrunk Festival in Galatea, so open your ears to Adam Hattaway and The Haunters' fully analogue new record and go catch them in their element onstage...
"Every decision was made to serve the feel. We like the sound of old music. That old, dark, warm sound and I think we made that happen. There are limitations when you record to tape, but those limits give you focus."
