Delaney Davidson presents 101 Paintings
Delaney Davidson returns after a roughly 20 year hiatus to painting. Water Based Oils. Pallete knife. Glazing. Working with a similar approach to landscape as Utrillo, Buster Black, and Whistler Davidson’s paintings are dark, colourful, playful, and we see him developing deeper into painting and away from drawing, as witnessed in his previous shows “Eyes For The Hills”, Halloween” and “Diamond World
Originally working in Print and Paint in Melbourne in the late 1990s, his musical work took over, and touring kept him away from the steady influence of a permanent base or studio.
“Catching a moment here and there over the years was always a frustrating way to reconnect with the medium, so carving out time earlier this year thanks to some horrific insomnia and anxiety, was a sweet and natural way to find my way back to painting. The momentum towards this show built from there” says Davidson cheerfully.
101 Paintings is his view of local landscape, nocturnal port views, spy thriller TV, 70s car movies, westerns and James Bond, a late night world. Is this a desperate attempt to hold onto some frantic grip of reality by documenting what he is seeing?
Davidson’s Exhibition 101 Paintings, is showing at the Donald Street Gallery in Lyttelton, (behind the British Hotel), a fitting place for the locally observed landscapes.
Opening on Tuesday November 3rd at 5:30pm and showing until 15th November. The Gallery is open Wednesdays to Sundays 10am - 4pm
