Troy Kingi Shares New Single 'Golden Gun' + Announces Album 'Yort, Ignik Yort'
The embargo has been lifted and the concluding tenth chapter of Troy Kingi's (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) ludicrously ambitious, award-winning 10|10|10 project – ten albums, across ten genres, over ten years — has been revealed to be... a James Bond tribute record?! Yort, Ignik Yort is a collection of theme songs for "twelve imaginary James Bond films", recorded at Abbey Road Studio 2 and the new Te Ngākau Recording Studios with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and orchestrator / conductor Hamish McKeich, featuring arrangements by Stephen Gallagher and David Long.
Gazing backwards while striding forwards, Yort, Ignik Yort refracts themes of "memory, imagination, reinvention and the passage of time" through Kingi's own fascination with MI6 secret agent 007's adventures on the big screen, "imagined across different eras of the franchise" — perhaps like a microcosm of the stylistic diversity expressed on his ten record project as a whole.
Sporting suitably stylish artwork by Asher McShane (whose drawings also adorn Christoph El Truento's MUSICAL POWER), 'Golden Gun' is the majestic and suave first shot fired from album number ten, made with support from NZ On Air and out in full on 27th November. Kingi and his group the 00’s will reunite with NZSO to perform Yort, Ignik Yort at WOMAD NZ 2027 this coming March. Listen up and cross fingers for a 10|10|10 box set...
'Golden Gun' is out today on major streaming platforms.
