Listen to Christoph El Truento's New Album 'MUSICAL POWER - Rub-A-Dub Special'

Christoph El Truento is one of Aotearoa's most respected producers, whose Midas touch has encompassed subtropical funk, club-sizzling footwork, gritty beat tapes, ambient soundscapes, and famously his jazz-informed hip-hop releases with fellow innovator Tom Scott — including Avantdale Bowling Club's TREES, a groundbreaking run with supergroup @Peace, and classic works with Aotearoa rap icons Homebrew. Launched this sunny Monday, on MUSICAL POWER - Rub-A-Dub Special the Tāmaki Makaurau multi-talent returns to and expands upon the dubwise territory surveyed on his 2023 long player peace maker dub.

The artist recruited an extensive cast of local greats to record his new long player — including Julien Dyne, Joe Kaptein, Cory Champion, JY Lee, Isaac Aesili, Jeremy Toy... — masterfully transmorphed via unknown (to this listener) studio alchemy into the deeply reverberant 12 track selection that is MUSICAL POWER. Booming low end holds down an ever-shifting kaleidoscope of sound and colour, every spin revealing imaginative fresh details for attentive ears to explore. Languorous keys and playful flourishes regularly work in tandem with rock solid grooves, such as on the lovely lap-steel assisted 'Grease Up', while vocals from heavyweights Troy Kingi and Mara TK bubble up from cavernous depths, like on the soulful 'CIRCUS'.

Guaranteed to be heard on speakers all across the motu this summer, Christoph El Truento is hosting a release party for MUSICAL POWER this coming Friday which is sure to be a hot ticket event, featuring El Truento’s One Stop “Pop Up” Shop on the night. He'll also be joining fellow dub king Pachyman at Double Whammy and a free show at the Festival Of Lights in Ngāmotu New Plymouth in January. Out on vinyl LP and digitally, now's a fine time to revisit Martyn Pepperell's profile of El Truento for AudioCulture HERE as you enter the visionary sound world of MUSICAL POWER - Rub-A-Dub Special...
