RADIO ONE PRESENTS: An Evening of Constructive Melancholy for the Festive Season

Following on from their sold-out album release show, Ōtepoti’s longstanding indie folk favourites THE BROKEN HEARTBREAKERS will play an end of year treat for Dunedin music lovers.

Opening the night are local treasures Hidden Ocean, and Emily Esplin.
Don't miss out on this very special night!

To hear The Broken Heartbreakers on record is a special thing indeed, but to witness them live with a full band is a rare pleasure. As well as the songwriting core pair of John Howell and Rachel Bailey, the full band features drummer Paul McLennan-Kissel, Ayumu Kobayashi on bass, and Alex Gilks on synth.

Playing a mix of old favourites and songs from their new album Imagine If We Could Just Keep Driving.

The Broken Heartbreakers’ music mixes the bleak with the beautiful, drawing on deep roots of folk and classic pop melody, but with a defiant, subversive twist and more than a touch of modern electricity.

** Ōtepoti Dunedin's EMILY ESPLIN continues to build her sonic world full of angst. Unashamed in her vulnerability yet pairing it with cut-throat witty lyricism, she navigates heartbreak through ethereal vocals and layers of high-energy distortion. Her sets move between moments of delicate acoustic tracks to bold, bursting rages of pop and rock colliding. Emily has quickly become a unique piece in the Ōtepoti music scene.

** Ambient folk-pop duo HIDDEN OCEAN is made up of Adelaide Dunn and Andrew Harray who are known for carving out unforgettable, dreamy and ethereal piano‑driven, contemplative soundscapes.

The night will be An Evening of Constructive Melancholy at its finest!

The Broken Heartbreakers New Album Reviews
Their finest yet. Very, very beautiful stuff. Intelligent, emotive. And Rachel, I don't know why she's not a megastar. The stuff that you might hear on 4AD, or internationally.
Radio NZ

Deeply insightful and incisive songs, crafted with care from the stuff of life.
13th Floor

Lovely melodies and harmonies, impeccable playing. Thoughtful folk-adjacent songs.
