Horn Shares New Album 'Bright Green Dull Ache' + Video For 'SULO'
Sounding akin to an even scuzzier Street Chant on opening track 'Screen Burn (ft. Hunter Saul Jackson)', Te Whanganui-a-Tara songwriter Abigail Macilquham has ripped the lid off Bright Green Dull Ache, the third long player this decade from Horn. An almost entirely solo outing for the new album (in contrast to the full band approach of 2025's Options and 2023's self-titled debut), recorded with Warwick Donald at Mansfield Street studio in Newtown, Macilquham follows her own muse down pathways of post-punk and noise-rock — the artist's playfully DIY, often minimal approach to song creation expressing a similar experimental spirit to Aotearoa's Tall Dwarfs and / or perhaps early Eno.
What unfolds is a distinctly uncompromising, poetic vision in sound and song. Bright Green Dull Ache feels like a windy city cousin to the songwriterly noise-scapes currently emanating from Tāmaki's T & M crew, while the squalling skronk of tracks such as '20 in Coins' and the clacky, drum machine-driven 'March' could be mixed up as lost Xpressway classics.
Horn is embarking on an album launch tour starting in mid-November, joined in the four main centres by a top tier roster of special guests. The cherry on top is Macilquham's self-shot new video for 'SULO', accompanying the feedback-spiked pop tune with a suburban dérive montage of the artist's neighbourhood and home. Enter the world of Bright Green Dull Ache and go catch Horn with friends this November and December...
