Swallow the Rat is a post-punk band from Auckland consisting of guitarist Brian Purington and drummer Hayden Fritchley, and now bolstered by the return of bassist Stephen Horsley. Together the trio operate somewhere close to noise-rock courtesy of a prickly rhythm section that arrives tightly wrapped in slabs of psyched out shoegaze’d guitar.
Since forming in late 2017 Swallow the Rat have released two albums and two EPs, all backed with extensive touring through Europe and the US. Their sophomore album South Locust debuted at #7 on the Official NZ Album Charts and went on to make numerous end of year lists, garnering heavy student radio play along the way. Armed with a live show that continues to crush venues across NZ (and beyond), the band has cultivated a dedicated underground following, earning them a swarm of coveted international support slots for the likes of Sebadoh, No Age, Gang of Four, Arab Strap, toe, June of 44, Quicksand, Mannequin Pussy, and A Place To Bury Strangers.
