French For Rabbits Announce The Dark Arts Tour Of Aotearoa

Masters of dream-pop French For Rabbits are taking the band on a country wide The Dark Arts tour this summer season, and have revealed eight shows from Tāmaki Makaurau down to Ōtepoti.  Brooke Singer and John Fitzgerald will be joined by the wonderful Ben Lemi (Trinity Roots, Dawn Diver), Penelope Esplin (Grawlixes) and drummer Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa, and plan to roll out brand new songs from their forthcoming album. Singer spoke on the record, due out early next year, saying "I’m still singing about climate change, how dire social media is and anxiety, but the album was just a joy to make – it feels really optimistic to me". Ethereal dream-pop luminaries French for Rabbits create music that feels as if it was crafted from the fabric ¬¬of the New Zealand landscape – guitar lines gliding and unfurling like salty waves breaking, drums echoing against isolated coastlines, and harmonies glistening like sunrays upon rippling ocean currents.

They will be bringing their naturistic musical alchemy to intimate venues around New Zealand in November and December on the Dark Arts tour for eight dates across the country, including two multi-dimensional shows in the Adam Auditorium at Wellington’s City Gallery.

The tour will see the full band perform at all shows (except for Napier and Martinborough in trio formation) testing the waters with new songs from their forthcoming album recorded with producer Jol Mulholland (Tami Neilson, Delaney Davidson) in between Covid-19 lockdowns. It isn’t due out until 2021, so this run of shows will be an opportunity to hear an early preview.

Originally formed in the small coastal township of Waikuku Beach by vocalist and songwriter Brooke Singer and guitarist John Fitzgerald, French for Rabbits expanded to include multi-instrumentalists Ben Lemi (Trinity Roots, Dawn Diver) and Penelope Esplin (Grawlixes) alongside drummer Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa. They have released three records including the NZ Music Award nominated debut EP Claimed by the Sea in 2012, and have since established themselves as a world-class act creating intelligent, evocative music for the discerning listener.

Of the album and tour, Brooke says “given the rather twisty-turny year we’ve all had, I’ve had a yearning to write and share music that feels uplifting. Not in a cheesy way, I’m still singing about climate change, how dire social media is and anxiety, but the album was just a joy to make – it feels really optimistic to me. We had a very nice time trying out different harmonies and arrangements – it’s poppier, brighter, and more creative too”.
