Dinosaur Jr. (USA) Auckland Headline Show Announced

In a world of hyper-accelerating change, US alt-rock gods Dinosaur Jr. are as mighty and enduring as ever. Paradigm-shifting innovators from 1984 onwards, Dinosaur Jr. combined metallic shred and hardcore punk with J Mascis' languid drawl for an inimitable run (although many tried) of long players, including You're Living All Over Me, Bug, Green Mind, Where You Been, and Without A Sound.

The O.G. team of Mascis, Murph and Lou Barlow (Sebadoh) launched their thirteenth studio album There Near to significant acclaim in August — praised by Pitchfork as "the messiest and most blown-out music they’ve made this side of the millennium" (complimentary) — and today they've announced one Aotearoa New Zealand headline date at their old stomping grounds, Auckland Town Hall, locked in for 16th January as part of a wider Australasia tour. Brought to you by Frontier Touring, presales launch right now!

Press release:

Frontier Touring are thrilled to welcome back legendary US rock band Dinosaur Jr. as they make their return to Australia and New Zealand for a series of headline shows in January 2027!

Touring in celebration of their thirteenth studio album, There Near (out now, listen here), Dinosaur Jr. will perform in New Zealand at Auckland Town Hall on Saturday 16 January before heading to Australia for shows in Brisbane at The Fortitude Music Hall on Tuesday 19 January, Sydney's Hordern Pavilion on Thursday 21 January, then south to the Forum, Melbourne on Saturday 23 January, over to Hindley Street Music Hall, Adelaide on Sunday 24 January before winding up at the Ice Cream Factory, Perth on Wednesday 27 January.

Last in Australia and New Zealand in 2024 on their Celebrating 30 years Of Where You Been tour, performing shows across the country, with a reputation as one of the formative influences on American alternative rock, Dinosaur Jr. - J Mascis (guitars, vocals, primary songwriter), Lou Barlow (bass, vocals), and Murph (drums) - are ready to bring their brand new album There Near and classics down under.

There Near is the sixth studio album Dinosaur Jr. have recorded in the 20 years since their triumphal rebirth. There have been several live and/or closet cleaning collections to keep punters sated for the five years since Sweep It Into Space, but there is nothing quite like having a full slab of new Dino tunes to fry your ears. And There Near has all knobs set to Extra Crispy.

Created in short, intense bursts over the course of a year at Amherst, Massachusetts, Bisquiteen Studio (USA), There Near was recorded almost entirely by Dino's core trio -- king of the thunder tubs, Murph, human tornado Lou Barlow on bass/vocals and the inimitable J Mascis on guitar/vocals -- with a bit of piano and organ work by local master musician, Ken Mauri. And the album roars from start to finish.

Trying to define the essence of Dino's sound is never easy. It's an instantly recognizable blend of loose vocals, sharp guitars and an animalistic rhythm section, but these parts combine into a whole far more magical and exciting than its components.

There Near continues Dinosaur Jr.'s string of classic albums. The new songs like 'Several Got Away' and 'Blowin' Up' are sure to sound amazing with their monstrous riffs blaring from live stages amidst their historical brethren.

With an electrifying live performance to remember and a sprawling discography of hits, including 'Watch The Corners', 'Feel The Pain', 'Over It', 'Freak Scene', 'Out There', and 'Just Like Heaven', don't miss out on these highly anticipated Dinosaur Jr. shows as they bring in the new year making their triumphant return to Australia and New Zealand in January 2027!
